I've always been bigger. Maybe not classified as being fat because I carry it pretty well. But, well, I'm fat. There's no fooling myself. In January, months of hard work paid off as my wife got pregnant with what will be our first child. I had been exercising a bit until that point, but I decided to ramp it up a notch and get my weight to where I can be healthy and be around a long time for my wife and kid.

I've been known to drop 40-50 pounds in 5 months or so on a few occasions, only to slowly gain that weight back over a couple years. This time is different. I know everybody says that and usually that statement doesn't come to fruit, but I've got that incentive...becoming a daddy.

Ran 4 miles for the first time ever yesterday. I see a Sports Illustrated cover in my near future. And I WILL be on that cover... I'm very good with Photoshop.

Bought some running shoes today. I've got (de)illusions of running outside someday. I'll have to wait a bit more for some decent temps, but I'll try them out on my treadmill for now.

great job derek!!! congrats on getting rid of those clothes. thats a big step!!! good for you!! i want to do more of that myself when my back is better. just get rid of it. stop holidng on to it b/c if i hold on to it then there is always the possibility of going back and i dont want that, EVERRRRRRRRRRR!

Slowly, but surely I'm getting into some of my "slim" clothes that have been in my closet for 5 years. Thankfully they're mostly solid polos which aren't out of style yet. When I drop another 10 pounds or so I will have to start buying some new clothes since I haven't been there in ten years. I'm looking forward to that day.

Ok, so my weightloss has hit a plateau. I know I shouldn't be putting all my stock into what the scale says, but it's hard to ignore that the numbers aren't falling anymore. Time to change it up. I ordered a heart rate monitor to, well, monitor my heart. I'm going to be sure to stay in the zone. I'm going to start lifting this weekend, which I know will help. I haven't taken any measurements of myself at all and I will now do that. I do feel looser clothing and a general slimming of my body, so I'm not totally put off by what that scale tells me. It still is irritating.

Workout and diet.
Everyone has a plan on what they are going to do to get healthier/slimmer. This is what I'm doing and it's what's working for me right now.
Right now anything less than 40 minutes of cardio a day, 5 days a week seems like a failure to me, so that's my minimum goal. I shoot for 50 minutes if I can work it into the schedule. I go hard and steady on my elliptical and treadmill in the basement and really build up a sweat. I like going down there since we just finished building a dedicated exercise room. It's enough incentive to keep me going back for more.
The plan is to add weightlifting to the mix soon. I just have to build a plan for myself with the stuff I have to use. I'm anxious to get that going as I know the benefits to building muscle.

My diet is simple. Resist the bad stuff. Sugars, candy, soft drinks and beer (that's not tough since it's winter). Try to have more fruits and vegetables and an overall smaller pile on the plate. I still eat what I want, just less of it. Making small changes in my diet makes it much easier to keep on track. I plan on bettering my diet over time to eventually make it part of a lifestyle change.

Winter is easy for me and is when I always drop the pounds. From June on will be challenging. That's when beer-league softball and heat start to play a factor. But, maybe this time is different. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it...
